June 1971 Graduation Trip

Me Jim Anderson and Otis

1967 Mustang convertible Baby Blur  289 automatic

We weree delighted to be out of high school and decided to take a road trip to Los Angeles area

The goal was to hit the warm beaches  and party. we had no place in particular or firends down ther eto hang out with . I had about $40 and each of the others had about the same.  but this was pre credit card and a weekend. (no banking)

When we got to Sata Barbara we went tothe beach and  I decided to go for a swim. We had been smoking pot the entire trip down so I was definitley intoxicated.  I ran and jumped into the ocean. Nice warm salty water. I had not changed clothes so  I jumped in fully clothed and  when I got out  my wallet was gone. I had the Going home money in my wallet and that was gone.

THis reality had a sobering effect since we wer a little less than half way and so we all dug into our pockets and collected about $8.00

Scattered memories I was very young 3-5 years old.

I remember the  Greyhound but it was a double decker and I thought that was nice.

We went to visit  Clara and  family in Boise  Caldwell and Weiser.

I remember Frontier days  with covered wagons and a fun fair. I tried to ride a small pig. got brushed off under a tree branch.

Got to ride in a  grain truck next to a combine (big red dump truck. we were int he back when the grain came in it was amazing  smell and the kids offered  me to chew the wheat after a long time  there was some gum like Gluten.

It was very hot weather I found it  oppressive but I was from teh SF bay area which was always cooler.

I remember the Aluminum cups and Ice water or lemonade.

We had some family picnics.

I met my GG mother Grace Goumaz Long and my Grandma Lois.

Cousins Rosalee   Anita and Julie  and Eleanor.

Had a Scary first Sunday in Church. Probably caused some scandal since I threw a fit.

I saw Ricky White face a calf being born they named him 'Ricky white face"

I remember the  cellar which was cool and smelled like cerial.

Also had fresh cows milk which  was OK but seemed too rich.

I have some photos from those trips.

Good Memories, I went back up there in 2017> Got some photos of Edwin Long and Grace long tombstones at the Cemetery in Weiser ID.

Beuluah's advice

You will have a 6 hour layover in Chicago Dearborn station.  Buy some magazines andstay in th estation. Do not wander outside the station.(bad neighborhood)

Of course when I was in dearborn station I needed to see outside  , just to test Grandma's advice. Well I opened a side door to exit. Looked down the windy dirty street and understood she was right so I went back in and read my comic books until the Train came

The Train left in early afternoon and headed west. As we picked up sspeed  I was sitting in a dome observation car on the right side looking out . we were parallel to a road. I saw cars on th eroad  but the FOrd mustang which was new to the market was speeding along the road. The Mustang was a new and very popular model.

A few minutes later I saw a cloud of dust coming towards me Surprised I had no Idea what it was until I saw a yellow drivers side front fender  with the Mustand emblem on it fly past my window. Apparently that car had tried to beat the train at a crossing and lost. It took us a long time to stop . probably a half mile. I went tothe rear club car which had a rear observation point. Looked down the track and saw only scattered debris wher th eimpact happened. We heard from the conductor that 3 people had died.

The 'Radical years"

Corky Gonzales Crusade for Justice  .

Denver conference

Subject? Generally it was to discuss western and south western movements of  groups representing a wide range of causes.

I believe it was to help establish a vision of common goals and activities.issues to unite on and help each other

with.

The sponsor was Crusade for Justice,

The location was a large church / school campus Denver CO.

Local Issues then were the Coors Boycott

there were many groups represented , Brown Berets (Latino version of the Black panthers among many others.

I was there on behalf of the YSA and SMC  student mobilization committee.. My mission? I don't know other than to be there and to listen and learn.

We drove there on highway 80 in a large Station wagon. I don't remember the names of all the folks I was with . Derrick ( tall black guy and a young Blond, I believe Carmen Alegria who was in some way connected to the Chilean embassy.

I met a Latina woman there who seemed extremely attracted to me.

However she was married and her husband was there too.

She had the Idea of leaving her husband and running off with me.

This did not happen and nothing  untoward or unethical happened.

I remember when I returned home discussing this with dad.

He asked me some hard questions that made real sense. I was 18 and she was older. She also had kids.

He asked me to think about  the practical nature of any such move.

I thought and then i decided there would be no moves in that direction.

Infatuation versus practical reality.

The trip home from Denver

Denver to Cheyenne to Rock Springs and home.

We left Denver headed north to Cheyenne where we were going to meet another traveler at the bus station and give her a ride west.

A big late spring storm had come up and dumped a lot of snow. We went to the bus station and waited for the bus , due to huge snow and bad conditions the bus was several hours late we waited in the bus station cafe ( a typical bus station greasy spoon ) After we ate Derrick and me and the blond girl went for a walk around the block. walking and chatting  small talk. there was fresh snow on the ground but it was still walk able As we walked a car pulled up from behind us on the left. It stopped and  we turned to see a sheriff's car .they stopped and got out and asked us what we were doing and why we were there it was after midnight by thie time. I remember the two deputies one was a white cowboy type and the other was a Native American .  The White one said " What are you all doing walking this time of night with a white girl" I was Latino looking Derrick black and the blond was well "blonde" We explained we were waiting to meet a friend.at the bus station. They asked where our car was? we told them and described it. as the Station wagon in front of the bus station. They said "Well you all need to go back to the bus station and wait there. "

We did as they advised.went back to the station and continued to wait for our soon to arrive passenger.

About 15 minutes after we got back into the cafe the two Deputies came into the cafe , they had their hats off and looked around for us . they spotted us and approached. they sheepishly asked if the car in front was actually the one we were in we answered yes,  They said "we just wanted to come in here and apologize for any inconvenience their stopping us might have caused. they further explained that they had run our plate through the NCIC Crime computer"" and they had not understood what 'Counselor Corps" meant  They called their boss who explained to them that we had diplomatic immunity and thus they had better go down there and make sure their interaction or interrogation did not result in an international incident"

They Apologized profusely and explained how we were welcome in Cheyenne and to just let them know if there was anything we needed.

The Car was an embassy car from the Chilean diplomatic mission in San Francisco. Aliende Government which the USA did a Regime change several months later. I have always wondered what happened to Carmen since many in the Allende government were killed.
