How long does it take to get 10,000 Bird Cages?
... I forget which was the most alternative rock/hippy radio station at that date, but it put a shout out for help to coordinate calls that were offering help. It was night I believe and I ended up staying 3 days. I learned a lot about oil covered birds. Who knew at the time?
... At one point we needed 10,000 bird cages. How long do you think it took to get 10,000 bird cages after I put out the request to the public? ... 15 minutes! Mr. Gallo had them and it was no problem getting truckers to Napa Co. to get them to the beach (Stinson, I think). It was at this point I realized the power of the media. A general called offering military help. It was a wild ride.
... I later spoke at a Congressional hearing about the spill at City Hall. And wouldn't you know it, afterwards one of the Congressmen hit on me. Somethings never change. SMH

If you had White shoes or pants you had just arrived. Spend an hour on that hay sand and tar mix and soon you were coated with a sandy black asphalt coating.

I helped my oldest sister & her pals with clean-up on Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica. We found tar spots after every storm for years after!

My mother & I worked at the Richmond Bird Center after the spill - horrific
My area was just under the south end of the GG Bridge . The hay boats would flake the straw and hay into the oil and we along the shore would collect it with rakes and heap it into piles.

The Craziest thing I ever did as a Kid in San Francisco.. In 64 or 65 they replaced the main gas lines underground on Juniper Serra boulevard. (near Stones town) the trench was open and so was the end of the pipe. The Pipe was 24 inch if I remember correctly and had taps (holes) where other pipes would connect. Me and a couple friends actually rolled on or bellies on our Skateboards down a few blocks of pipeline. Claustrophobic and dangerous. Pushing ourselves out backwards was not easy

The Hermann Safe Company, based in San Francisco, was a manufacturer of heavy steel safes and bank vaults for the western United States, from 1889 to the 1960s.[1][2][3] John Hermann was the president and founder of the company,[4][5] who passed it to his son, John Hermann Jr. The Mosler Safe Company later purchased the company and appointed John Hermann Jr. as vice president, while continuing as president of the Hermann Safe Company subsidiary.[6] The company also did business as The SafeMart and Hermann Associates in later years. The company is notable for providing the bank vault at the old San Francisco Mint on 5th Street.[7] Hermann Street, the current location of the U.S. Mint in San Francisco, is named after the company.
My most lucrative job in San Francisco as a Kid. I was a paper boy (News Call ) I took deposit bottles back I sold fireworks Sold Canned fog and Key chains at fisherman's wharf.. But the best rate of pay per hour worked was pushing a snack and souvenir cart in Chinese New years parade. 20% of the gross... That was often enough money to fund all of my summer activities Movies etc.. I did a few Columbus day and St Patrick's day but those were much lower revenue . Once the wholesaler got to know you and trust you You always got a good cart. I wished the Parade was 4 days long and not just 4 hours.
